If you’re following a strength-training program and your weight is going up, you may actually be gaining muscle rather than fat.
The fact that your weight goes up does not mean that you are not losing body fat. Muscle is more dense than fat. The same amount of muscle takes up less room than fat. Therefore, you should watch for signs, like how your clothes fit. If your weight is up, but you go down a pants size, you are probably right on track.
You can measure it. Measure your waist, hips, chest, arms, and thighs, every few weeks and log your advancement.
If you gain weight and your measurements have increased, then you need to look at the food you eat. Don’t think that you can eat more, just because you are exercising. This will cause you to gain weight because you are gaining both muscle and fat. If this is happening to you, it may be a good idea to keep a log of what and how much you are eating. It may also be a good idea to log your activity. This will allow you to see the calories in and out.
I took a different approach. I did light weight training and heavy cardio for four months and lost 50 pounds. This allowed me to lose the weight I wanted to lose and see results. I did lose some muscle. However, once I lost the weight I wanted to lose, I rebuilt myself with a more intense strength-training program.
No matter how you do it, the bottom line is getting results. Therefore, it is always important to do what is right for you.
It is also always important to consult your doctor before starting any weight loss or fitness program.
